When will a house or property need repointing? Brickwork isn’t always as solid and durable as it looks. It can fail if it has not been treated appropriately. Your building may have damaged bricks. If your brickwork is damaged, it might not be just blighting your home’s appearance; it could also be letting more moisture penetrate your home or even compromising the wall’s structural integrity. The brickwork naturally adapts to damage, but seriously damaged bricks may need to be cut out and replaced – ideally with bricks that match the remaining but undamaged pieces in appearance.

Other common issue is failed or unsuitable pointing. This is the case when the brickwork might have been pointed in a manner that has led to the wall inadvertently picking up damage. The mortar could trap moisture and so prevent it escaping via the mortar joints. This, in turn, would force the moisture to emerge on the brick faces, where it could be frozen and then lead the brick surfaces to crumble. There is also so-called efflorescence; it refers to white deposits that form on brickwork due to water including dissolved salts rising to the surface. Usually it does not damage the brickwork from the practical point of view, but however, it is unsightly and replacing the brickwork might be the best solution.

Other reasons for repointing can be an inappropriately cleaned surface, that can cause damage to your brickwork, and damp. If you have noticed signs of damp in your house, it might be penetrating damp, which can happen if water shifts from a high part of your home to another part further down.
